Cantobre, the village
Dating back to its 11th-century castle, the village of Cantobre sits like an eagle's nest atop a massive rock promontory, offering breathtaking views over the Dourbie river valley as well as the Trèvezel canyon. Cantobre is located five kilometers away from the town of Nant, and 30km from Millau, and 90km north of Montpellier. It is located within a Regional Nature Reserve called "Les Grandes Causses", a landscape characterized by canyons and high plateaux. It also borders another Regional Reserve, called "Les Cévennes", known for its wooded hills and granite mountains.
Learn more about the village here and on the local tourism website. This website for Cantobre gîtes is also an excellent source of information.
Overview of the house
The house for sale has been poised upon its rock outcropping since the 15th century. Its main windows and terrace face east, welcoming the morning star and the rising sun. One bedroom window faces west, directly onto the stained-glass window of the neighboring church. The kitchen and living room open to the south, facing a village courtyard.
The house is in excellent condition, entirely renovated in the 1990s, including a new slate roof. The house is configured as follows:
Ground floor
- Living room with a fireplace and access to a terrace with sweeping views
- Dining room and adjoining sitting room
- Kitchen
- Storage room, potentially convertible to a bedroom
- Bathroom with toilet
Upper floor
- Three spacious bedrooms
- One small bedroom
- Bathroom
- Separate toilet
Basement
- Two vaulted cellars
Other important information:
- A recently-installed heat pump provides heating. The fireplace is a cozy addition.
- The courtyard is communal property, but the homeowner is free to cultivate any small patches of soil and to install other plants in pots, as long as they respect the village's aesthetics.
- For those who wish to have land for cultivation, there are two rivers beneath the village (10 min by foot), and privately-owned plots that can be leased or potentially sold.

Interior views
The house was renovated in the early 1990s and has not changed at all since. The current wall paper and furnishings make the house seem dark, but it has the potential to be light. For this reason, some of the photos have been altered to help the potential buyer imagine the space without the current dark wallpaper and furnishings. Original photos are also available upon request, as well as a complete video tour.
